Moving at the Speed of Creativity by Wesley Fryer

Calling all aspiring Oklahoma digital storytellers!

I’m pleased to announce an upcoming opportunity for PK-20 educators in Oklahoma to learn more about digital storytelling. A 3 day facilitator workshop for the Oklahoma Digital Centennial / “Celebrate Oklahoma Voices” project is being offered at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) College of Education November 28, 29 and 30, 2007.

More details are available on the celebrateoklahoma.us website, including an online application for participation. This professional development workshop will support the U.S.S. Oklahoma Memorial Dedication Digital Learning and Videoconferencing project, which will be formally announced on Monday, November 19, 2007. Project information for educators will be posted on the Oklahoma World War II Stories website Monday, and the digital stories created during this workshop (and those afterwards which include veteran interviews) will be submitted through the Oklahoma WWII website. ANYONE worldwide is invited to participate in this veteran oral history digital storytelling initiative, regardless of whether you live in Oklahoma or not, and whether or not you have or are able to attend one of the ODCP facilitator workshops.

If you are an Oklahoma educator or know an Oklahoma educator who might be interested in this project, please pass along this information! A PDF flyer is available which can be printed and/or forwarded via email. The cost of the workshop is $150, and participants will receive both a portable digital audio recorder and a digital camera thanks to support from a continuing SBC/AT&T grant administered by the College of Education at the University of Central Oklahoma.

This digital storytelling workshop continues the series of facilitator workshops offered as part of the “Oklahoma Digital Centennial Project” in the fall of 2006 and spring of 2007. Additional workshops for Spring and Summer 2008 are being planned and will be announced in mid-December on the Celebrate Oklahoma website. As we transition from our centennial year celebrations, we anticipate changing the name (but not the focus or work) of our project into “Celebrate Oklahoma Voices.” Digital storytelling curriculum and resources will be added to this site, along with the forthcoming wiki associated with the U.S.S. Oklahoma Memorial Dedication digital learning project.

To stay up to date on Celebrate Oklahoma Voices / Oklahoma Digital Centennial Project activities, subscribe to our free mailing list (a Yahoo Group.) A Ning social network for the project is also available on http://celebrateoklahoma.ning.com.

You mentioned this is only for OK teachers. The Joomla site does not say that. Can you clarify for me? My curriculum director and I would head that way from TX if you allow it.

Scott: We have not had anyone from out of state ask to participate before! Please do apply! I’ll change the celebrateoklahoma.us website to reflect that teachers from other states can participate also. The grant funds do not require, as far as I know, that participating educators just be from Oklahoma.

Thanks so much. Do y’all have a hotel block set aside? Is there one place better than another in that area? Also, is there an agenda set yet? We have about a five hour drive from here, and I know the question of what time we would get home will come up.
