eLearn 2005 presentation by Terence Cavanaugh, Curriculum and Instruction,

The New Reading Teacher
– “Every teacher is a reading teacher”
– “Every teacher is a technlogy teacher”
Methods to integrate literacy into technology literacy classes required in the state of Floridai
– “Intro to Educational Technology” is required for everyone in undergrad programs
– this is the only edtech class many tech
– goal is for tech to be infused
Problem I encounter often: my undergraduates are very ineffectual readers
State of Florida has declared itself to be an ESOL state, so all teachers need to be ESOL-ready
– according to ISTE standards, teachers also need to be technology teachers
– more than 17% of young children encounter a problem learning to read (NCATE 1996)
– 42% of fourth graders….
my students come into the class with 100% using the Internet
– paradigm shift in the definition of literacy
– used to be: read job applications, etc.
International Reading Association standards related to technology are helping bring on board
I am trying to address this literacy gap, to help prepare teacher candidates
Big problem we have: Teachers teach as they were taught
– so how are we going to effectively prepare teachers to teach if we continue to teach in isolation
– most students report that high school teachers didn’t use the internet
– big disconnect between what the teachers are doing and what students are doing
– complaints about bandwidth in schools and access
– modeling of technology use for most students is poor
In Word under Options, Spelling and Grammar you can do readability analysis up to grade 12
– this works for grade 12 level writing and below
– this can be used to analyze children’s literature books to
Book “How People Learn” is free
CASS has a free ebook
Has developed technology enhanced literature circles
Students are using Word autosummarize to reduce electronic formats of works like Moby Dick to 25% of the original
70% of texts in high school are now available as electronic texts!
Terence has a great website on this:
Terrence’s main homepage: http://www.unf.edu/~tcavanau/
He also has a book coming out with ISTE this next month on eBooks.
Addressing gap between EDIT and C&I faculty: Terence addresses this by presenting on literacy topics for those faculty members
– in intro literacy class, doing an intro to electronic texts and what is available
– integrating these resources into literacy activities
– creating assessment tools
Has taken 3 years to get to this point
– now other faculty are asking for help to infuse these resources across the curriculum
