Book recommendations for digital storytellers

I was asked recently for book recommendations on digital storytelling in the classroom. Here are a few suggestions which come to mind, as well as some links to electronic resources on digital storytelling. If you still need to do some Christmas shopping for digital storytellers in your family or circle of friends, these books would make great gifts! 🙂

Nikos Theodosakis published “The Director in the Classroom: How Filmmaking Inspires Learning” back in 2001, and I think it is one of the best, practical texts on digital storytelling and using filmmaking in the classroom written to date. I own and have read Nikos’ book, and have used it in undergrad and grad courses I’ve taught on technology integration. New copies are not available for sale from Amazon but it is available from used book sellers.

The following books are NOT ones I own or have read personally, but I know and highly respect the ideas and work of the authors and can therefore recommend them with confidence.

Bernajean Porter is the author of the fantastic digital storytelling support website Digitales.us, and has published the book “DigiTales: The Art of Telling Digital Stories.”

Joe Lambert, co-founder of the Center for Digital Storytelling based in Berkeley, California, is the author of the book “Digital Storytelling: Capturing Lives, Creating Community.” He is also the lead author of “Digital Storytelling Cookbook,” which is the manual used for CDS workshops. A freely downloadable PDF of the opening chapters to the book is available. A podcast recording of Joe’s keynote in March 2006 at the SITE conference is available via my blog or directly from the Internet Archive.

In addition to these books, of course, extensive online resources relating to digital storytelling are available. The 2 page PDF guide “Storycorps National Day of Listening: Do It Yourself Guide” is one resource I just discovered this week. More resources are available on my social bookmarks tag for digital storytelling (http://delicious.com/wfryer/digitalstorytelling), my main wiki curriculum page for digital storytelling, and my digital storytelling presentations/workshops index page. Publicly tagged sites on delicious.com for “digitalstorytelling” can also yield good resources.

A variety of resources for digital storytelling including image resources, music and audio resources, and copyright/fair use resources are available on the Google Site for the “Celebrate Oklahoma Voices” project.

Do you have a favorite book on digital storytelling that you recommend to others which I haven’t included here?

I’d have to add Jason Ohler’s book: Digital Storytelling in the Classroom

Jason takes a great approach to the storytelling process with the emphasis on story and wrote this book with teachers in mind.
